Hungary is going to prove again that it can be a good president for the Council of the European Union, said President of Hungary Katalin Novák in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest on 10 January, where she greeted the members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Hungary.

The head of state in her speech called attention to the fact that while fifty years ago one-fifth of the world’s population was European, today this rate is only ten percent. Nowadays, the citizens of EU countries make up only six percent of the global population, which figure will decrease to four percent by 2070.

If we do not pay attention to the population decrease in Europe, we make a huge mistake, said Katalin Novák also emphasizing Europe’s decreasing global role in the economic field. The question is whether we will be able to change this, she added.

She recalled that there would be elections in Europe this year, therefore, 400 million European citizens will have the opportunity to define Europe’s political direction. Right after the elections, Hungary – which is celebrating its 20th anniversary of joining the EU and its 25th anniversary of joining NATO – will take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, emphasized the head of state, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Hungarian Defence Forces. She also underlined that Hungary will prove again that it can be a good president for the Council of the European Union.

Highlighting two important topics of the Hungarian rotating presidency, the president of Hungary emphasized again the demographic challenges and the importance of enhancing the accession of the countries of the Western Balkan to the EU.
